Kenya Faces Growing Concerns as Ebola Cases Rise

(MENAFN) Kenya is confronting its first recorded Ebola outbreak, with authorities facing growing concerns about further transmission of a disease that neighbouring countries, including Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), have dealt with previously.

The country has confirmed nine infections, including the initial patient, who arrived from DR Congo and died two weeks ago. Subsequent cases involve four of the deceased patient's relatives, three healthcare workers and a hospital cleaner, all of whom are linked to the first case.

Despite government efforts to reassure the public, fears are mounting that the virus could spread beyond the currently identified group. The United States has issued a travel warning for its citizens heading to Kenya, while Uganda, Ethiopia and Somalia have increased their vigilance.

Public anxiety is growing as Kenyans question whether the outbreak can be contained before it reaches more communities.

DR Congo has recorded more than 4,000 deaths since the disease was identified there in May, making the outbreak the second deadliest Ebola epidemic on record. The country has also reported over 9,500 infections.

Kenya remains vulnerable to additional cases crossing its borders, according to the International Rescue Committee, which is cooperating with authorities in both countries to limit transmission.

The current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a relatively uncommon variant for which no approved vaccine or specific treatment is available. However, clinical trials are ongoing.

Questions have also emerged over the movements of the initial patient before his condition was identified. From the beginning, Kenyans questioned how he managed to spend time in the area most severely affected by Ebola before travelling to two other countries without being diagnosed. He died only days after reaching Kenya, raising further concerns about the timing of detection and the potential for exposure before his illness was recognized.
